Research Engineers are required to work on a range of innovative research projects in a range of engineering and science disciplines (construction, manufacturing, computing, materials etc) with the Centre`s industrial sponsors. Applicants should be highly motivated and have (or expect to obtain by October 2006) a minimum of an upper second class honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate engineering/science discipline. A lower qualification is acceptable if supplemented with an appropriate postgraduate qualification (e.g. MBA/MSc) and/or substantial industrial experience. Experienced engineers/scientists are particularly encouraged to apply.

Tuition fees will be paid at UK/EU student rate. The degree of `Doctor of Engineering` (EngD) will be awarded on successful completion of the programme.

Overseas applications are welcomed but the difference between home and overseas fees will need to be met from another source. Applicants should be highly motivated and have (or expect to obtain by October 2005) a minimum of an upper second class honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate engineering or construction discipline. A lower qualification is acceptable if supplemented with an appropriate postgraduate qualification (e.g. MBA/MSc) and/or substantial industrial experience. Experienced engineers who are already employed within the construction industry are particularly encouraged to apply. The Centre welcomes employees from other companies who are willing to sponsor them on the programme. In these cases arrangements can be made for industrial studentships.

  • Optimizing Thermal Mass Building Design Using Life-Cycle Assessment and Whole Life Costing Techniques (Thermodeck)

  • Improving sustainable resourcing within ready-mix concrete in the UK (BRE/BREEM)

  • Further Developments in the Structherm Ltd new and existing products (Structherm)

  • Embedding Sustainability in Civil Engineering Projects (CIRIA - start date would not be until April-July 07)

  • Whole Life Value in the Context of Life Extensions to Aging Infrastructure (CIRIA - start date would not be until April-July 07)

  • Designers Response to CDM (CIRIA start date would not be until April-July 07)

  • Best Practice Knowledge Acquisition and Reuse through Data Mining Technology (Rolls Royce)

  • Optimising welded steel pipeline design for the energy industry using FEA-based modelling and simulation methods (TWI)

  • Fatigue design of welded joints under variable amplitude loading (TWI)

  • Best Practice Data Management to Facilitate Company and Project Management (Buro Happold)
Successful applicants receive a tax-free stipend of a minimum of £16,838 p.a and a generous training allowance. The stipend may be higher for experienced graduates. Tuition fees will be paid at home/EU student rate.
